S U M M A R Y:
This article talks about the ethnic (religious, cultural, Nation) tension between the Sinhalese and the Tamil population. The conflict and war between these two nations ended in May, 2009, but government took away the area that was last captured by the Tamils. (Tamil Tigers) It also talks about, Ceylon, a place in Sri Lanka where tea is produced (Ceylon is also known as the tea state) . The Sinhalese brought up the fact that the Tamils were gaining British favoritism from this. Later another conflict started between the Sinhalese and the Tamils to see who can determine the ethnic division and also the ruling of the country independently (triggered by the tea production). Many devastating occurrences had taken place after this conflict. Many lost there lives and much damage was done. Later, the conflict became known to the public as they worried about the Sri Lankan's and the crime against the civilians who lived there. It also said in this article that the UN was informed of war crimes against civilians. Lastly, the article covers the threat of army intimidation voters. To this day, there will always be the friction between whose land Sri Lanka will actually be. The Sinhalese ? Or the Tamils?
C O N N E C T I O N :
The connection I make with this news article is that I sometimes feel this tension between a Sinhalese and a Tamil. Me, being a Tamil, I feel that although we are millions of miles away from the War and Conflict, many of the Sinhalese still look at you as if your their enemy. One day, in grade 8 , a new girl walked in.She happened to be Sinhalese. My mother told me not to get to close to them cause they're evil. But why must we name these people evil just because back in our home village there is war and conflict between our two nations? What sense does that make to attack each individual who may or may not want to be involved in this particular problem? Although, I strongly believe this is wrong. Many Sri Lankan's to this day believe that the opposite ethnic is evil and therefore there is tension between us people wherever we go. This connection helps me further understand my knowledge on this article because the whole problem is the tension between these two nationalities. It helps me understand what type of hate the people would be facing as there the ones in the situation. Us being so far away, feel so much tension from each other, how would the people feel if they see them every single day, everywhere? Therefore, the self to text connection I make is that I feel the same tension that is faced in Sri Lanka between Sinhalese and Tamils.
